Frequently Asked Questions

What do I do if I'm having difficulty in a class?

·         The first person a student or parent needs to contact is the classroom teacher.  The student, teacher and parent can then work together to create a plan for the student's academic success.

How do I contact the classroom teacher?

·         By calling 821-1754 you can reach the main office front desk to request an appointment or leave a message on the teacher's voice mail. Teachers can also be reached by e-mail through the ISIS program or at www.ausd.net/ahs.

What resources are available at AHS for additional academic support?

·         See the handout "Academic Success" available under each grade level on the Counseling web page.

What is ISIS?

·         ISIS (Internet Student Information System) is a computer program which allows parents to access their child's attendance and most current Progress and Grade Report at home via the internet.  In order to get an ISIS account, a parent must first register on-line at www.ausd.net/ahs.   After registration is completed, the final step is to bring a photo ID to Mrs. Harvey in the administration building in order to receive a password.

How can a student or parent make an appointment with a counselor?

·         Counselors can be reached by e-mail through the AHS internet website at www.ausd.net/ahs and then click on Counseling.  In addition, parents and students can contact the Counseling Office at 821-1795.  Students have immediate access to a counselor from 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. each day at the Counselor of the Day (COD) desk, located in the main administration office, next to attendance.

How do I address a question or concern related to a specific department (Math, English, Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, Fine Arts, P.E., ELL, Resource)?

·         Please contact the department chairperson at 821-1754 to make an appointment if you have a concern related to departmental procedures or policies.

Where can I get information about Sports?

·         Check with Mrs. Ottaviano at 821-1757 in the administration building, directly across from the attendance counter.  She has sports lists, try-out dates, and forms to fill out to be cleared to try-out and participate in sports.

Do my grades freshman year count?

·         YES!  Cal State and UC colleges both require 4 years of English (9th grade is one of those), and two years of social science, including Modern World History.  Additionally, any Lab Science, Foreign Language, or Math class either counts as a college prep class or is a prerequisite to enroll in a college prep class.

What is a prerequisite?

·         It is a requirement you must meet before you can take a specific class.  Sometimes it is a placement test, a specific class that must be completed with a specific grade, a teacher recommendation, or a class restricted to certain grade levels (only Juniors and Seniors, etc.).  Class prerequisites are listed in the Curriculum Guide.

After I choose my classes do I need to keep the Curriculum Guide?

·         Definitely!  There is a lot of information you can refer to all year including:

§         AHS Graduation Requirements – page 2

§         Cal State and UC Requirements – page 3

§         California Scholarship Federation qualifications – page 7

§         Cal State and UC approved course lists – pages 4 & 5
