From holly-avepta@ausd.net Mon Apr 25 16:04:58 2005 From: holly-avepta@ausd.net (Holly-AvePTA Holly-AvePTA) Date: Mon, 25 Apr 2005 08:04:58 -0700 Subject: [Holly-Ave] A Message from Mrs. Blackstock re: Standards Tests Message-ID: Dear Parents, Between May 2 and May 13, all of our students will be participating in the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program. This program includes the annual academic tests required by the State of California. Students in grades 2-5 will take the California Standards Test (CST) that measures student performance in meeting state academic standards. Some students will also take the CAT 6, which is a nationally standardized test. The two tests together will be used by every public school in the state to make up the STAR testing program. Grades 2-5 are tested in areas of reading, spelling, language and mathematics. This year the 5th graders will also take a science standards test. By the end of May, 5th grade students will also be assessed in physical fitness. Together, all of these tests provide important information about instruction and how well your child is progressing. During the testing weeks at Holly Avenue school will begin and end at the regular times. During the days we will schedule blocks of time for testing each morning and will finish before students go to lunch. The state has set a limited time to complete all assessment, however we will space out the tests so that students go to recess and have time to relax between tests. Please make sure your child arrives at school on time each day. It is important not to schedule appointments for your child during the testing time. Students will continue regular class sessions and curriculum outside of the testing time (an exception will be the cancellation of Title 1 tutoring before and after school). Arcadia's curriculum is abundant and complex and teachers closely follow California state standards. We believe that the curriculum prepares students in all subject areas and develops the appropriate skills for their grade level. We do not expect students to study specifically for STAR assessments. As it is everyday of school, during testing students need to eat a nutritious breakfast and get plenty of sleep. Most elementary children need about ten hours of sleep each night. Many students benefit from an additional healthy snack they may eat during morning recess. Please to not hesitate to call should you have any questions or concerns.
