Maybe you’ve never heard of Family Day. Theconcept is simple. On Family Day, make sure you eat dinner with yourchildren. Dad, the research is clear. The more often your kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely theyare to smoke, drink, or use drugs. See, when you eat dinner as a family, youare spending time with your kids talking to them about their friends and whatis going on in their lives. You have an opportunity to look for red flags, andyou have an opportunity to coach and mentor them by answering their questionsand setting a good example. Family Dayis a national movement launched by the National Center on Addiction andSubstance Abuse to help parents connect with their kids and prevent drug andalcohol abuse. And though the official date is September 26, the more often youeat dinner as a family, the better! It’snot enough to just eat dinner together, rushing through the meal so you can getback to your book, work, or television program. Turn off the TV. Leave yourcell phones in the other room. Let the answering machine do its job. Talk to your kids during dinner. Ask questions like: What was your favorite part of the day? What was your least favorite part of the day? Are you having any problems you need help with? Of course, this might be uncomfortable at first, particularly if your kids have entered the private teenage years. But if youand your spouse model healthy communication habits, your kids will—at aminimum—observe the two of you share ideas and brainstorm for solutions (whenobstacles present themselves). So markyour calendars: September 26. Maybe you’ve never heard of Family Day. Theconcept is simple. On Family Day, make sure you eat dinner with your children. Dad, the research is clear. The more oftenyour kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink, or use drugs. See, when you eat dinner as a family, you are spendingtime with your kids talking to them about their friends and what is going on intheir lives. You have an opportunity to look for red flags, and you have anopportunity to coach and mentor them by answering their questions and setting agood example. Family Day is a nationalmovement launched by the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse tohelp parents connect with their kids and prevent drug and alcohol abuse. Andthough the official date is September 26, the more often you eat dinner as afamily, the better! It’s not enough tojust eat dinner together, rushing through the meal so you can get back to yourbook, work, or television program. Turn off the TV. Leave your cell phones inthe other room. Let the answering machine do its job. Talk to your kids during dinner. Ask questions like: What was your favorite part of the day? What was your least favorite part of the day? Are you having any problems you need help with? Of course, this might be uncomfortable at first, particularly if your kids have entered the private teenage years. But if youand your spouse model healthy communication habits, your kids will—at aminimum—obthe two of you share ideas and brainstorm for solutions (whenobstacles present themselves). So markyour calendars: September 26.
