From hugo-reid@lists.ausd.net Tue Sep 8 16:42:30 2009 From: hugo-reid@lists.ausd.net (hugo-reid@lists.ausd.net) Date: Tue, 8 Sep 2009 08:42:30 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Hugo-Reid] Letter from Principal Bruce Message-ID: <786607.52504.qm@web111302.mail.gq1.yahoo.com> September 3, 2009 Dear Parents,   Greetings, we are into our third day of school.  Hugo Reid has had a very successful start to the school year.  I expected nothing less.  Our Raider Days were extremely smooth for a first time venture.  Your pre-registration has allowed our teachers to hit the ground running.  On day one, they were teaching curriculum instead of collecting and sorting paperwork for the office.  For the office, it meant more time for assisting students and parents on the beginning days of school.  We also had our Back to School Night (BTSN) the day before school.  I have heard many compliments on this as well.  We wanted to have the parents and staff on the same page before the first day of school.  No one wants to argue with their 7 year old about school or classroom policy for two weeks.  I think our parents appreciate being ‘in the know’ right from the beginning.  I am grateful for our community’s ability to try some new things in the interest of your student’s success.  I know our teachers and students are having a much more effective year already.   Our PTSA is off to a great start.  I have met with the PTSA council to share our goals for the year and clarify our mission.  For instance, our parents may notice the Hugo Reid newsletter, The Hugo Reider, will arrive four times this year as opposed to five issues.  We are saving materials and printing cost.  In addition, we have other forms of communication we have not had before such as the ListServ and the Blaster Phone Messages in addition to flyers, Wednesday/Thursday packets and so on.  This year we are also looking into a web-based communication for our parents; it will be linked to our Hugo Reid website. In addition, we always welcome our parents on site to communicate with our staff.  There are many ways to be involved with the PTSA.  Recently, our PTSA supported our very successful Raider Days and First Day Coffee.  In fact, I would like to thank everyone for their time and efforts during those two big events.  PTSA creates a rich environment for our students.  You can give time, resource or strength: be involved.    The safety of your children is a high priority here at Hugo Reid School.  In order to keep our sites safe for our students there are a few measures we ask of our parents.  At both sites, please check into the office before going through the hallways.  We ask that parents do not interrupt instructional time with notes, lunches or hugsJ; simply drop them by the office.  At the big school, parents may notice large signs that ask parents not to enter hallways before class is dismissed.  Your children can meet you at a predetermined location on campus once released.  In addition, starting on September 8, please allow your students to walk to the line up areas of the HRE on their own..  We are trying to foster responsibility.  Drop offs and pick ups should obviously be on time.  On the rare occasion a parent is going to be late, please call the office.  If you need to pick your child up early for an appointment, please send a note or email the teacher ahead of time; your communication helps us track all 615 students upon departure.    Unbelievably, we have one of the better traffic environments when compared to the other elementary schools.  Our student population is divided between two sites.  We have a large parking area for the HRP and we have good circulation around the HRE.  However, there are few things to remember.  If you are going to leave your car at HRP, you can park it in the top lot, on Panorama by Michillinda or on Altura by the De Anza cul-de-sac.  When parking in the top lot, please be very careful when backing up or driving with limited sight distance; our little ones are small and fast!  Students that go to the HRE, can meet their parents anywhere on Hugo Reid Drive, Altura or Cabrillo; you should make the decision based on the age and responsibility of your children.  Be sure you are going around HRE in clockwise pattern.  Our problems arise when our community asks their students to cross traffic to get into the car.  If you do not see your student – simply take a lap and try again.  If you have made few laps and there is no sign, you will be able to pull up in front of the office within a few minutes and get their assistance.  A bell rings 15 minutes after dismissal.  It is a signal to all students not picked up to return to the office for phone calls and pick up.  Therefore, if you are running late, the student should be on the office steps or in the office for assistance.  If you have students at the big school and little school, the big kids meet at the flagpole in front of the HRE office so they can travel together to the HRP to retrieve their little sibs and return to the HRE.  Again, this is a decision that should depend on your children’s age and responsibility.  There are crosswalk guards the whole way, but we like to have the children in 4th or 5th grade before making this trek.  Lastly, please mind the rules of the road with respect to crosswalks, red curbs and pedestrians.  Nothing throws off the symphony more than one or two drivers taking shortcuts.    Our librarian, Jan Brown will be training parents to work the library very soon (jbrown@ausd.net).  This means, she will be opening the library to our students shortly.  As of right now, the HRE library will open on the week of September 21.  The first and second graders at HRP will start on the week of September 16. Last but not least, the kindergarteners will start on October 9.  The kindergarten classes always need the most assistance and training.  If you would like to help in that capacity, we would forever be indebted to you.  It is very important that everyone know Jan and the PTSA have been working very hard over the past two years to improve not only the circulation sizes of our libraries but the quality.  The PTSA has generously approved large funds so the students at Hugo Reid have more curriculum supporting non-fiction resources and quality narrative selections.  I am very happy we are enhancing our children’s education through partnerships and planning.   Have you noticed the cool t-shirts our little Raiders are wearing? They have “Hugo Reid Rocks” and there is another one with raccoon prints on the back.  We sold these two designs during Raider Days.  Now, we wonder, when should our children wear them to school?  After checking numerous staff members and the original intention of our dress code, I am making the decision to allow these Hugo Reid T-shirts to be worn daily as part of our dress code.  The shirts promote school spirit and utilize our school colors.  On the other hand, older Character Counts t-shirts will only be allowed on Fridays and Character Counts assembly days.   In closing, I am very happy with the way the school year is starting.  I have noticed many, many smiles to start the year.  There are numerous new things happening in and around campus that will improve student learning.  In fact, based on the initial summaries from the state of California Hugo Reid has continued to improve our educational standings.  We continue to have more students earn proficient or better in most content areas.  We have many reasons to be thankful.  Hugo Reid has and experienced groups of highly qualified teachers, supportive families and children that exceed in effort.  Welcome to Hugo Reid!     Sincerely,   Thomas S.
