Arcadia Unified Statement on Racial Inequities

 

Dear Arcadia Unified Staff, Parents/Guardians, and Community,  


Like many people across our country and world, our Arcadia Unified community is dealing with sadness, anger, frustration, and grief because of another senseless death of an African American. The Arcadia Unified School District recognizes the horrific death of George Floyd. His death has focused a light on institutional racism and educational inequities that exist in our country, our communities, and our schools. The events that have unfolded over the past several days across our country have had a profound impact on our community and our children. As an educational body, we commit to listening, learning, reflecting, and acting to stand against racism. We can be better, and we will do better, as we move forward to creating a socially-just society for our students. 


As a community of educators, we believe in living out our purpose of challenging and inspiring all students to make a positive and profound impact on their world. This can only be achieved when each student, regardless of the color of their skin, has access to a world-class education free from discrimination and racism. The very nature of our diversity is what makes us better together. 


In AUSD, we believe we hold a responsibility to our students and parents to lead through example. Our five core values as a district, as seen on the walls of the Arcadia Education Center and throughout our schools, are Collaborate, Think Critically, Be Creative, Offer Empathy, and Learn from Failure. We know the time is now to focus on and live out our values more than ever. It is incumbent upon us to collaborate with our students, staff, and parents of color; to think critically of ourselves, and as an institution, about our shortcomings and how we can improve; to be creative in our examination of this process and in providing solutions; to offer empathy to all of our students, staff, and parents of color who have encountered institutional racism and educational inequities. We must also indeed learn from our past failures to ensure they are not repeated. 


We have deep empathy for the pain and anger being felt for the many questions with no answers and the voices that have not been heard for too many years. As we move forward, we believe AUSD has a responsibility and an opportunity to elevate these difficult conversations in the commitment to a better tomorrow. Declaración Unificada de Arcadia sobre las Desigualdades Raciales

 

Estimados Miembros del Personal del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Arcadia, Padres de Familia / Tutores y Comunidad en general, 

 

Como muchas personas a lo largo del país y del mundo entero, nuestra comunidad unificada de Arcadia está lidiando con la tristeza, la ira, la frustración y el dolor debido a otra muerte, sin sentido alguno, de un afroamericano. El Distrito Escolar Unificado de Arcadia reconoce la horrible muerte de George Floyd. Su muerte se ha enfocado hacia el racismo institucional y las desigualdades educativas que existen en nuestro país, nuestras comunidades y nuestras escuelas. Los eventos que se han desencadenado en los últimos días en todo nuestro país han tenido un profundo impacto en nuestra comunidad y en nuestros niños. Como una entidad educativa, nos comprometemos a escuchar, aprender, reflexionar y actuar para oponernos al racismo. Podemos ser mejores, y seguro que lo haremos mejor, a medida que avancemos en la creación de una comunidad socialmente justa para nuestros estudiantes.

Como una comunidad de educadores, creemos en hacer realidad nuestro objetivo de desafiar e inspirar a todos los estudiantes para que tengan un impacto positivo y profundo en su mundo. Nuestros cinco valores centrales como distrito, tal como se pueden leer en las paredes del Centro Educativo de Arcadia y en todas nuestras escuelas, son Colaborar, Pensar críticamente, Ser creativos, Ofrecer Empatía y Aprender del fracaso. Sabemos que es el momento de centrarnos y vivir nuestros valores más que nunca. Nos corresponde colaborar con nuestros estudiantes, personal y padres de color; pensar críticamente sobre nosotros mismos, y como una institución, sobre nuestras deficiencias y cómo podemos mejorarlas; ser creativos en nuestra evaluación de este proceso y en proveer soluciones; ofrecer empatía a todos nuestros estudiantes, personal y padres de color, quienes se han encontrado ante racismo institucional y desigualdades educativas. También debemos aprender de nuestros fracasos pasados para asegurar que no se repitan. 

 

Tenemos una profunda empatía por el dolor y la ira que se sienten por las muchas preguntas que no tienen respuesta y por las voces que no se han escuchado por tantos y tantos años.
A medida que avanzamos, creemos que el AUSD tiene la responsabilidad y la oportunidad de elevar estas conversaciones difíciles en el compromiso de un mejor mañana.
