CORONAVIRUS UPDATES AND COMMUNICATIONS

Coronavirus Update 50 - Summer Update, Published Tuesday, June 20, at 3:36 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

We hope that your summer has been safe, enjoyable, and restful for you all. With our 2021-22 school year approaching, we wanted to check in with you and provide an update as we prepare to welcome back our students and staff to our campuses next month. With the recent news about the increase in cases, the Delta variant, and continually changing guidelines for masks, we want to help clarify as much information as possible that we have to date, knowing more changes will likely occur.

Back to School in the Fall

We are very much looking forward to celebrating our students’ return from Summer Break on August 11 (Arcadia High) and on August 12 (TK-8 grades) for full-day, in-person instruction. For your convenience, please find our 2021-22 school year calendars here. As we have shared in previous Coronavirus Updates during last school year, and as Gov. Gavin Newsom has said since the introduction of “California’s Safe Schools for All Plan” (first announced in December 2020), there is an expectation for California schools to resume full-day, in-person instruction this fall. As we prepare to engage in a more “normal” schedule this school year, we want to reaffirm our commitment to following all current local and statewide health and safety guidelines and will do everything in our control to ensure the health and safety of our students, staff, and families.

Current Mask and Health and Safety Guidelines

As of July 17, the LA County Department of Public Health reinstated its mask mandate, which applies to everyone, regardless of vaccination status. To align with current health and safety guidance, we will require our students and staff, absent an exemption, to wear masks while indoors throughout the school day. Additionally, as of July 12, 2021, the California Department of Public Health shared, “evidence indicates that in-person instruction can occur safely without minimum physical distancing requirements when other mitigation strategies (e.g., masking) are fully implemented.” Accordingly, we will not have a minimum physical distancing requirement on our campuses. We will continue to work closely with our local and state public health departments to implement any and all health and safety guidelines should any changes be made.

Independent Study Option

With our return to full-day, in-person learning, we will not be offering the distance learning concurrent hybrid instruction in the fall as we did last year. Please note, the State’s emergency distance learning provisions that were put in place for the 2020-21 school year expired on June 30. Currently in place are Assembly Bill 86, Assembly Bill 130, and Senate Bill 130, which require independent study options. Therefore, per this guidance, we will be offering an Independent Study Option through our Rancho Learning Center. You can read more about the recent changes and guidelines that have been directed by the state in this article

To be clear, this option will remove your child from their home school and teacher, enroll them in this separate Independent Study program through Rancho Learning Center, not have as many class and course options as the student’s home school, and it will not be similar to the distance learning option that many of our students opted for and participated in last year. The Independent Study option will operate on individual master agreements between the student, parent, and school, which will require a significant amount of unsupervised and independent work by students. It will keep your student on track for matriculation and graduation, and unlike some school districts, we do have ample experience and have offered Independent Study programs for years.

If you are interested in more information or are considering enrolling your child in our Independent Study program, please visit the Rancho Learning Center website. You may also contact Dr. John Tung at [email protected].

Free School Lunches Continue

State and federal guidelines have allowed for free meals (breakfast and lunch) to continue for all of our students through the 2021-22 school year. It remains important, however, for us to collect data from our families by way of the Free and Reduced Meal Application. Did you know that completing this application may also qualify your student(s) for scholarships, financial aid, test and application fee waivers, provides important funding for our schools, may result in utility rebates for families, and more?

We encourage our families to take a few minutes to complete the 2021-22 school year Free and Reduced Meal Application online now here. If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact our Nutrition Services office at (626) 821-8322.

What’s Next

While we are excited to start the new school year and our staff is enthusiastically planning to welcome all of our students back to school in a few weeks, we also understand there are concerns, frustrations, and more questions that people will have as we get closer to our full opening in the fall. To help keep everyone updated and informed, starting now, we will resume with our weekly Coronavirus Updates. You can expect weekly updates from now until at least the first few weeks of school. We are also in the process of creating a new COVID-19 webpage with information specific to this coming school year, along with a new set of FAQs for the fall semester. Both the new webpage and FAQs will be published by the end of next week.

Commitment to Communications

As always, we remain committed to updating our dedicated Coronavirus webpage with new resources and information. You can view this communication, our 50th, (in English and Chinese) and all the previous updates we have sent to all parents and staff on our website. If you or someone you know needs additional language support, please let us know. We also encourage you to follow our Facebook page and Twitter page, where we will share additional non-urgent information and Arcadia Unified news. You can sign up for our Arcadia Unified Community Email List here, and/or encourage others to do so to ensure receipt of our communications. We wish you continued safety and happiness in the final days of summer ahead.

Sincerely,

Arcadia Unified School District

Coronavirus Update 49 - Thank You! Published Friday, June 4, at 2:08 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

Thank you, thank you, thank you. We can’t express our gratitude enough to everyone in our Arcadia Unified family. From our remarkable students and staff to our outstanding parents and community members, we could not have had such a successful school year in the midst of a pandemic without your resilience, support, understanding, flexibility, and resolve. Our values, as seen on the walls of the Arcadia Education Center, are as follows: Collaborate, Think Critically, Be Creative, Offer Empathy, and Learn from Failure. We are so proud of our team, you included, for living our values even through the most difficult of circumstances to ensure our students can continue to live out our purpose: “To challenge and inspire students to make a positive and profound impact on their world.” When our Arcadia High seniors walk across the stage tonight, and as all of our other students matriculate to their next level in school and life, we know they have had the necessary support and encouragement to make a positive and profound impact on their world. We could not be more thankful and proud.

Coronavirus Updates and Staying Connected This Summer

It’s remarkable to think that our first Coronavirus Update was sent to our community on January 23, 2020. 49 Updates later, we will continue to keep you as informed as possible throughout the summer.

Coronavirus Update 48 - Final Week Ahead Published Friday, May 28, at 1:16 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

In less than a week, the 2020-21 school year will be in the history books, and one week from today, our Class of 2021 graduates will be at Santa Anita Park celebrating their hard-earned Arcadia High School diplomas. With the final few days on the horizon, we are here with our weekly check-in. We’d also like to pause for a moment in recognition of those who have fallen in service to our country as we head into Memorial Day weekend. As a reminder, there is no school on Monday.

State Testing

As was noted in Update 42, the California State Board of Education requested a flexibility waiver from the U.S. Department of Education to allow for flexibility of the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA), CA Science Test (CAST), and CA Alternate Assessments (CAA). Arcadia Unified exercised the option to use local assessments for grades 3-8, and Smarter Balanced Assessments were administered for students in 11th grade. Parents will be electronically notified as score reports become available. Directions for accessing the reports will be sent in the notification this summer. Student score reports will be accessible via the parent portal in PowerSchool.

New Leaders and Next School Year

As we close out the current school year, we gratefully look ahead to the 2021-22 school year, which will see us welcoming back all of our students, teachers, and staff to all of our campuses in the fall. We ask that you please make sure that the contact information for your student(s) is up-to-date with your respective schools so that you don’t miss any important information related to the school year ahead. The new school year will also see some familiar faces in new leadership roles, with the following appointments made during this week’s Board of Education meeting

Arcadia Unified Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment, Catherine Merel, who we celebrate with sincere appreciation as she enters retirement after this school year will be succeeded by Dr. Daniel Hacking, who currently serves as our Dana Middle School Principal. We are currently hiring for the Dana Middle School principal position.

Rancho Learning Center Principal, Laurie McQuaid, who we also share our deepest gratitude for her service to our district as she heads into retirement after this school year, is passing the baton to Dr. John Tung, previously an Assistant Principal at Arcadia High and currently a principal at Lone Hill Middle School in San Dimas.

Hugo Reid Principal, Dr. Lauren Leahy, is being given our heartfelt adieu as we celebrate her promotion in Solana Beach Unified Schools and will pass the torch to Kimberly Lauxen, who currently serves as Hugo Reid’s school counselor.

Coronavirus Update 47 - Next Year & Masks Published Friday, May 21, at 3:16 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

We hope you and your family are doing well. It’s remarkable to think that there are just eight school days left in the year. As we wind down the year and head into the weekend, we wanted to provide you with another Update with the latest information.

Next School Year

Though we are entering the home stretch of this school year, we have naturally already been planning and thinking ahead for next school year and know our families are as well. As mentioned in previous Updates, next fall, all Arcadia Unified schools will be welcoming back all students and staff to campuses for normal pre-pandemic school days, including all extracurricular activities, sports, performing and visual arts, clubs, etc., pending any changes in the trajectory of the guidelines and health restrictions come August.

Masks

Masks are and still will be required for the remainder of this school year per the guidelines from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH). Please continue to wear a mask when you are on any part of our campuses. We continue to appreciate your cooperation and support with the health guidelines. Last Saturday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) clarified coronavirus advice for schools, recommending the continued, universal use of masks and physical distancing, which came after its announcement last week that vaccinated Americans could forego masks indoors. You can read more about the CDC’s clarification via this N.Y. Times article.

Arcadia High School Campus Open for Public Use

We are pleased to announce that Arcadia High School, First Avenue, and Camino Grove campuses are now open again for the public to enjoy. All health and safety protocols must be followed when on our campuses. Hours of use are as they were before the pandemic, with typical hours running from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the week and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on the weekends. Please note that hours of use are subject to change, and our students and programs have priority use. We enjoy our partnership with the City of Arcadia in allowing the public to use our facilities and greatly appreciate our community members cleaning up after themselves, removing litter, and taking great care of and pride in our campuses.

Vaccines Available

In addition to the vaccination clinics we have held, the county is continuing to offer free vaccinations. According to LACDPH, you can easily find a vaccination site near you, make an appointment, and much more by visiting: www.VaccinateLACounty.com. If you don’t have internet access, can’t use a computer, or you’re over 65, you can call 1-833-540-0473 for help finding an appointment or scheduling a home-visit if you are homebound.

Important Dates

May 31- Memorial Day, All Schools and Offices Closed

June 3- Last Day of School for all schools!

June 4- Arcadia High School Graduation

August 11- First Day of School for Arcadia High School

August 12- First Day of School for all Elementary and Middle Schools

Coronavirus Update 46 - Student Vaccinations Published Friday, May 14, at 2:50 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

We hope that the month of May has gotten off to a great start for you all. As of today, we are three weeks away from Arcadia High’s Class of 2021 graduation at Santa Anita Park, which means we are a little less than three weeks away from concluding this historic school year. With things wrapping up, we wanted to continue our weekly check-in with new information, resources, and reminders.

Latest COVID-19 Guidance and Recommendations

As mentioned in previous Updates, while the number of COVID-19 cases drop and restrictions also lessen, we are continuing to maintain our current health and safety guidelines that we implemented when we reopened our schools, including wearing a mask, while school is in session. We are able to increase some after-school in-person activities, as we mentioned in last week’s Update 45, such as graduation and prom. Yesterday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released guidance indicating that people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 can safely resume activities that were done prior to the pandemic (see link below). According to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH), “L.A. County and the state will review the recommendations in order to make sensible adjustments.” You can read more about this from a press release issued by LACDPH yesterday.

Student Vaccinations

We are pleased to announce that we have partnered with the Albertsons/Vons Pharmacy team to help offer a vaccination clinic at Arcadia High School for our students. Wednesday, the CDC affirmed the recommendation by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to expand the emergency use authorization of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for adolescents 12 to 15 years of age. We have been able to add additional vaccination appointments to help accommodate our middle school students, in addition to our high school students. An email with detailed information was sent yesterday to Middle School families and last week to our High School families from our Health Services Department to eligible families. Be sure to check your email if you would like further information. In the meantime, there are other vaccination opportunities available for our students being offered through the county. You can read more about that in the following paragraph via LACDPH.

“Vaccinations sites across L.A. County began vaccinating younger teens (yesterday), and all eight County sites are offering Pfizer for younger teens as of (yesterday). At the County sites, and many other sites, appointments are available and walk-ins are welcome. Please note that many sites require that children be accompanied by a parent or guardian or that the child is accompanied by a responsible adult and has a signed consent form. Teens are also required to bring proof of their age at sites where they are not known to the provider. Visit the Public Health website for a map and list of sites offering Pfizer vaccines.” You can read more about this from the press release issued by LACDPH yesterday.

Coronavirus Update 45 - Yellow Tier Published Friday, May 7, at 1:47 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

As we end Teacher Appreciation, National Nurse, and School Nutrition Employee Week today, we continue to celebrate and thank our remarkable staff for the work they do that is so vital to our health, safety, and success. A special thanks to our teachers, nutrition staff, and nurse heroes this week! Please be sure to thank them if you have the opportunity to do so.

We also wanted to take a moment to provide another update with the latest information for our families.

Los Angeles County Now in the Yellow Tier

Los Angeles County is officially in the Yellow Tier in the state’s tiered system as of yesterday. With the continued reduction in cases and another drop in Tier status, restrictions continue to lessen. For example, there is now expanded capacity at restaurants, gyms, museums, etc. You can read more about the new restrictions via this press release from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. Please note, even with the drop to Yellow Tier, Arcadia Unified will continue with our current health and safety protocols, especially during the school day, and school schedules for the remainder of the school year.

Arcadia High School Graduation

We are excited to announce that we are able to host our annual Graduation Ceremony at Santa Anita Racetrack on June 4. Physical distancing and other safety protocols will be in place, along with a limited capacity for guests. We are also pleased that Arcadia High will be able to host several other Senior Activities to honor and commemorate our remarkable Class of 2021. AHS will remain in communication with more information on specific events and activities.

Important Dates *Updated*

We have updated our school year calendars to reflect that there are not any “minimum days” during the last week of school. With the adjusted school-day schedule for this year during the pandemic, the current schedule will remain in effect through the remainder of this year. As such, there are no minimum days for elementary and middle schools. Arcadia High School will have its final exam schedule. Look for further communications directly from your school as we get closer to the end of the school year.

You can view all of the updated school year calendars, including next year’s, via this link.

May 31- Memorial Day, All Schools and Offices Closed

Coronavirus Update 42 - Latest Information Published Friday, April 16, at 3:30 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

We hope this message finds you and your family well. It’s been an exciting and historic week throughout the district as we opened our elementary schools for the first time in over a year and as we get set to welcome some of our middle and high school students back next week for the in-person learning option. We want to take a brief moment to recognize our remarkable staff for all they have done to prepare for both the in-person return to campus, as well as for our virtual learning. We are incredibly proud of our staff for all their dedication, hard work, flexibility, ingenuity, and care they have shown to help our students adjust once again. We are also so proud and appreciative of our students and parents for their continued resolve and support. We sincerely thank all of you.

Elementary Schools

As mentioned above, all of our elementary schools re-opened for the in-person option on Monday. The new procedures for the on-campus option went very well from day one and continued to improve with minor adjustments throughout the week. We were pleasantly surprised to hear one of our own parents share her positive experience on KPCC radio. A big thanks to Melissa for her kind words. You can submit some kind words of your own for our staff and can find more info on how to do that in the “Nice Notes” section below. Continue to check your email/communications directly from your school for further details and more information.

Middle and High School

All of our middle and high schools open for the in-person return to campus option on Tuesday. We wish them the best of luck for another historic #ArcadiaFirstDay. You can get a sneak peek of what our campuses look like now in this AUSD Safety Measures and Protocols video. Here’s another comprehensive inside look at the planning process for our return to schools as written by two of our AUSD Digital Communications Interns. Be sure to check your email/communications directly from your school for additional details.

State Testing

On April 2, the California State Board of Education requested a flexibility waiver from the U.S. Department of Education to allow for flexibility of the Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA), CA Science Test (CAST), and CA Alternate Assessments (CAA). California requested that districts be allowed to use local assessments in place of the state assessment, when applicable. On April 6, the U.S. Department of Education granted California this flexibility. Arcadia Unified will exercise the option to use local assessments in elementary and middle grades and the Smarter Balanced Assessments for 11th grade high school students. 11th grade students will begin testing this month on April 19. Grades 3-8 will complete their local assessments next month in May.

Grades 3 - 8

  • Renaissance STAR Math and Reading Assessments

Grade 11

  • Smarter Balanced Assessments remotely for both ELA and Math

 #ArcadiaFirstDay

As of today, we have gathered over 250 photos for this most historic #ArcadiaFirstDay, which have truly captured the sentiments of excitement mentioned above. You can access our 2021 School Reopening #ArcadiaFirstDay Facebook Photo Album Here. Please feel free to email any #ArcadiaFirstDay photos you didn’t get the chance to share yet or that you will take next week to [email protected], and we will add your photos to our album!

Don’t forget to Like and Follow our Facebook page to see your photos in action, important updates, such as our Coronavirus Updates, and more throughout the year, including emergency notifications.

Nice Notes (Please Consider)

In an effort to recognize our amazing teachers and staff during the pandemic, and since we have been unable to host our typical staff appreciation events this year, we have created “Nice Notes” to help show appreciation and gratitude for our remarkable staff. If you would like to join us in helping show some #AUSDAppreciation for our wonderful Arcadia Unified team members by sending a Nice Note of appreciation, you can easily do so with our Google Form here. Please note that submissions must be between 75-150 words in order to be considered. You can view the beautiful, uplifting Nice Notes already submitted honoring our education heroes here or on our Facebook page.

Important Dates

Coronavirus Update 41 - Latest Information Published Friday, April 9, at 5:34 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

We hope you are enjoying your Spring Break! While it’s been a week of rest and relaxation for some, many of our incredible staff have been working all week to help ensure a safe return to campus for those students and families who are opting to do so. All of our elementary schools will be open on Monday, April 12, for the first time in over a year. The following week, our middle schools and high school will follow suit. We are so proud of our staff for the remarkable job they’ve done ensuring we re-open our campuses as safely as possible. Speaking of pride, we are very proud of our Dana Middle School Mariners for earning a spot in the 2021 California Distinguished Schools program. Read more about this exciting recognition here.

Safety Measures and Practices

With the final touches taking place this week, our staff has been working remarkably hard, putting in long hours for months to help prepare for a safe return to school. Here’s another sneak peek video for a brief preview of many of the safety measures and protocols taking place at our schools and a look at what you can expect for those who will be returning to campus soon. Another one of the safety investments we have made is the purchasing of 45 high-powered Electrostatic Disinfectant Sprayers. You can see how they operate and learn more in this video as you watch the sprayer being used at one of our schools. For more safety and health protocols, details, and plans, please visit our dedicated Coronavirus webpage.

Safety Measures

Health Screening Information

As recommended by the LA County Department of Public Health, all students and staff at Arcadia Unified School District who are returning to in-person learning will be required to complete a daily health screening to reduce the likelihood of an exposure at one of our campuses. Our screening platform is both secure and easy to use, and it will help streamline the health screening process. If your elementary child is returning to campus, you should have received an email with detailed instructions, and you can try the new screening system now if you would like. You may also access and practice using our health screening platform here. If your elementary student is returning to campus and you did not receive an email about our new health screening platform, you can email [email protected]. For students who are returning to middle or high school, you will receive detailed instructions in the coming week.

In addition, as our team puts the finishing touches on our health and safety measures for a safe and happy welcome back for our students, we need your help too. Please take a moment to review with and remind your students about how to protect themselves and others from the spread of COVID-19. You can also watch this animated video with your students about how to properly wear a face covering. We are better together, and working together to do our part will help make all of the difference in ensuring everyone’s health and safety.

Technology Upgrades Ahead of Schedule

Our Technology and Information Services (TIS) team is ahead of schedule and will have every technology upgrade completed in all 11 of our schools by Monday. That means our TIS team has upgraded 400 teacher workstations in just nine days, and our Maintenance team has supported by installing 300 new access points in that same amount of time. Staff from departments across our district have pitched in to lend their important time and helping hands. We could not be more impressed or thankful for this dedication shown by all of our team. You can take a look at the new technology upgrades in this video

As we enter into another major transition in our learning environments with brand new technology upgrades, we expect there will be inevitable glitches and issues as everyone adapts. Thank you in advance for your patience and grace. We know our remarkable teachers and resilient students and staff will quickly work through any issues they may face.

LA County Travel Advisory and Guidance Update

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recently revised its travel advisory and guidance to align with the recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The updated guidance applies prospectively as of April 5, and states in part:

  • “Because fully vaccinated travelers are less likely to get and spread COVID-19, persons who are fully vaccinated can now travel provided they take precautions and follow safety recommendations.”

  • “Fully vaccinated persons may travel but should continue to take precautions. If asymptomatic, no quarantine or testing is needed upon return.”

  • “Definition of Fully Vaccinated:  A person is considered fully vaccinated >2 weeks following the receipt of:
    • the second dose in a 2-dose series (Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna)
    • one dose of a single-dose vaccine (Johnson and Johnson/Janssen).”

The full advisory can be accessed here. As a reminder, Arcadia Unified does not have the authority or jurisdiction to monitor travel. We simply ask that all families and staff follow LA County travel guidelines to help ensure a smooth and safe transition to in-person learning after Spring Break and moving forward. Please contact the LA County Department of Public Health for any questions about its travel guidance and guidelines.

Coronavirus Update 38 - Latest Information Published Friday, March 19, at 3:29 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

We hope you had a nice week and have an enjoyable weekend ahead. We wanted to touch base again and provide you with the latest information and resources surrounding the reopening of our schools. We are incredibly proud of all of our teachers and staff who are working so hard and diligently to provide both in-person and virtual learning environments for our students and families. We also express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to our students and families who continue to support everyone and adapt to the evolving circumstances.

Elementary Schools

Our teams continue to work on the multitude of logistics to ensure a safe reopening in-person option for our students on April 12. Thanks to our parents for responding to the surveys and helping with this important process. Specific schedules for drop-off and pick-up will be sent by the end of next week from your specific school. For the latest information and updates for our elementary schools, you can visit this webpage. You can look for more information coming directly from your school in the coming weeks as we get closer to April 12.

Middle and High Schools

Similar to our elementary schools, our middle and high schools continue to make great progress toward the in-person learning option, which will begin by April 19. Schedules for middle school will be sent by the end of next week from your school. As mentioned in Update 37, the instructional models and schedules at each school will be determined by the individual School’s Site Leadership Team. Each school’s leadership team or council consists of students, parents, teachers, and administrators. This process is similar to the one used to create the school’s current virtual learning models. You can anticipate more information coming directly from your school in the coming weeks as we get closer to April 19. For more resources and information about middle and high schools reopening, you can visit this webpage

New Resources

We continue to try and provide as much information and resources as possible to help with the changing guidelines and many questions that come with reopening our schools. We have created an Arcadia Unified Frequently Asked Questions document that we will continue to add to and update as information becomes available and as changes occur. Many of the frequently asked questions were garnered by our most recent ThoughtExchange forums. You can see the answers to our most recent ThoughtExchange in this video update. As mentioned in Update 37 last week, in addition to the new reopening models website, we have also created a COVID-19 Dashboard to ensure transparent and accurate information regarding COVID-19 cases within our district. We have also posted another safety plan, the COVID-19 Safety Plan (CSP) on our website. All of these resources and links can be found and accessed from our Coronavirus Webpage, which also hosts our most recent board meetings, this and all Coronavirus Updates, and other resources.

Travel Guidelines Via the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

As Spring Break (April 5-9) approaches, as of this Update, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH) states the following regarding travel and quarantines:

“If you do travel into Los Angeles County from outside of California, you need to self-quarantine for 10 days after you arrive and must limit your interactions to people in your household/people with whom you live. If you travel into Los Angeles County solely for essential work purposes, you need to still self-quarantine outside of your work for 10 days and ensure you do not mix with others outside of those necessary to conduct your essential work.”

You can read more from the LACDPH on its “Travel Advisory and Guidance” here. AUSD has no authority nor jurisdiction to monitor travel. We simply ask that all families and staff follow County travel guidelines to help ensure a smooth and safe transition to in-person learning after Spring Break. Please contact LACDPH for more information or questions about LACDPH travel guidelines.

Commitment to Communications

As always, we remain committed to updating our dedicated Coronavirus webpage with new resources and information. You can view this communication, our 38th, (in English and Chinese) and all the previous updates we have sent to all parents and staff on our website.

Coronavirus Update 37 - Middle and High Schools Reopening Published Friday, March 12, 7:19 p.m.

Good evening Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

We hope everyone is doing well as we head into the three-day weekend. As we continue to progress toward reopening our schools and anticipate entering the state’s less restrictive Red Tier, we wanted to provide another update with new information and resources.

Middle and High School Reopening Dates

With county and state health restrictions and guidelines continuing to change, we anticipate reopening our middle and high schools by April 19. The instructional models and schedules at each school will be determined by the individual School’s Site Leadership Team. Each school’s leadership team or council consists of students, parents, teachers, and administrators. This process will be similar to the one used to create the school’s current virtual learning models. Parent surveys have already been sent to ask parents their preference for returning to in-person instruction or remaining virtual. These survey results will help determine each school’s new in-person and virtual learning models. We greatly thank all of our parents who have provided their feedback. More information regarding schedules will be updated on our newly created Roadmap to Reopening website. Schedule information will also be posted on school websites when the scheduling process is complete and parents are informed. Just to reiterate, while we are preparing for students and staff to return to campuses, we will also continue to provide a remote virtual learning environment for those students and families who would prefer that. We are greatly appreciative of our teachers and staff who have and continue to work very hard to provide both options.

Elementary School Instructional Model Update

Based on ongoing feedback provided by stakeholders since May 2020, Arcadia Unified School District’s administration, principals, and members from the Arcadia Teachers Union developed three model schedules that provide the most viable options to offer both virtual and in-person instruction, while meeting the rigorous mandates for allowing students and staff on campus. Model schedules were also created with instructional minute requirements set by the California Department of Education for the 2020-21 school year.

The most recent parent interest survey was sent March 1, with results shared back to parents on March 3. A teacher survey was sent Monday, and approximately 77% of 166 teachers who responded indicated that they prefer Model 1 (simultaneous synchronous model). The committee met on March 3 and March 5 to determine the best hybrid models (result: 3). The committee met again today to finalize everything, including parent communication about options. Parents will be asked to commit to one option. This survey will be sent out today and will remain open until Wednesday. To read and learn more about the potential elementary models, you can visit the elementary school reopening webpage here

Elementary After School Care For Free through Right at School

In continued preparation for reopening our elementary schools on April 12, we are excited to announce free after-school care for those families electing to return their students to in-person instruction. We will be paying for Right at School’s after-school program as an additional support for the scheduling needs of families that select in-person learning for the remainder of this school year. We are also offering this service to our remarkable staff. Right at School will be reaching out to families soon with more information.

New Resources

As we continue to provide new information and resources, we wanted to share a few more new resources with you. In addition to the new reopening models website, we have also created a COVID-19 Dashboard to ensure transparent and accurate information regarding COVID-19 cases within our district. We have also posted another safety plan, the COVID-19 Safety Plan (CSP) on our website. All of these resources and links can be found and accessed from our Coronavirus Webpage, which also hosts our most recent board meetings, this and all Coronavirus Updates, and other resources. In addition to the current FAQs on our site, we will be adding another set next week.

ThoughtExchange Q&A Opportunity

With this latest update and information, we know that there will be additional questions people have. In order to continue to help answer questions and receive feedback, we will be providing another opportunity to ask questions via ThoughtExchange. You can access the ThoughtExchange now if you would like, and we will leave it open for questions until Tuesday morning, March 16, at 10:00 a.m. The question is, “With opening dates for all our schools now announced, what are your questions regarding schools reopening?” You can leave a question, or since others may have already entered similar questions, feel free to skip ahead to rating the ones you agree or disagree with. Our team will address as many of these questions as possible, and we will send out the results via video by Tuesday evening for people to view at their convenience.

Commitment to Communications

As always, we remain committed to updating our dedicated Coronavirus webpage with new resources and information. You can view this communication, our 37th, (in English and Chinese) and all the previous updates we have sent to all parents and staff on our website. Thank you all so much for your continued positivity and support.

Sincerely,

Arcadia Unified School District

We begin March with hope in our hearts and continued resolve to supporting our students, staff, and families in every way possible. Return Date for Elementary Students TK-5

We have set April 12 as our return date for our elementary students, Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade. With COVID-19 case numbers continuing to decrease, and the opportunities for our staff to be vaccinated increasing, our goal is to open our elementary schools on April 12.

Update 34 - The Path to Reopening Published Tuesday, February 16, 2021, 4:52 p.m.; updated Chinese translation published, Thursday, February 18, 2021, 8:17 p.m.

Good afternoon Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

We hope everyone is doing well and had an enjoyable extended Presidents’ Day weekend. As the COVID-19 case rate slowly decreases and the news headlines about schools reopening increase, we wanted to send an update with a breakdown of the latest information and communicate with all of you where we are on our path to returning our students to campus. While the rapidly changing headlines of schools potentially being able to reopen are exciting for many of our families, we also recognize that with the vaccine shortage and continued uncertainty of this ever-evolving pandemic, this news is unsettling for many of our families. Knowing that there are mixed emotions within our own community, our priorities and guiding principles that have helped us navigate the pandemic successfully will continue to guide us. We will continue to provide our students with an exceptional education thanks to our remarkable staff, and we will remain empathetic and consistent as we continue on our path to reopening our schools.

Priorities and Guiding Principles to Reopening Schools

  • Continuing to make student, staff, and community health and safety our highest priority
  • Ensuring a robust and consistent learning environment for our students with as few disruptions as possible
  • Supporting the vast needs of our diverse students, staff, and community
  • Allowing our staff the opportunity to be vaccinated before returning to in-person learning, which will also help minimize the risk of learning loss due to a quarantine or shutdown ordered by the health department per current guidelines
  • Remaining thoughtful, strategic, and patient knowing the federal, state, and county guidelines and protocols evolve and change rapidly as more data and information is gained and decisions are adjusted
  • Continue to bring our Arcadia Community together by collaborating with our teachers, staff, bargaining units, and families
  • Social-emotional wellbeing of our students and staff

Update on Vaccines for Arcadia Unified Staff and City of Hope Partnership

Our team has been working diligently to ensure our staff will have the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible, and we have been exploring many different avenues and possibilities to accomplish this. We have exciting news on this important component of our path to reopening schools, as we are in the process of finalizing a partnership with the City of Hope and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH). This partnership will help prioritize our staff in receiving the vaccine as soon as possible. The first opportunity for our staff to receive the vaccine will be open to our staff who are 65 or older and school district health care providers. This could happen as soon as this weekend. The second dose for these participants is projected to be available starting as early as March 20 and will be scheduled at the time they receive their first dose. As there is still a limited supply of vaccines in our area, this is great news, but these estimated dates could change as dictated by the supply and other factors.

Opportunity for On-Campus Enrichment and Social-Emotional Activities for Some Elementary Students Soon and Learning Pods Via Right at School

As we continue to progress toward some TK-5 students returning to campus for in-person instruction, we are currently working on a plan to have some elementary students return to campus in the afternoon for enrichment, physical activities, and social-emotional opportunities within the next few weeks. We are excited to continue to work on this with our Right at School partner and be able to help provide this opportunity for our students and families. Once the final details are in place, we will communicate those with eligible elementary families. Beyond this new afternoon elementary student engagement opportunity, on-campus learning pods remain available for our elementary students via our Right at School partner. These learning pods currently allow elementary students to be on campus during the school day while receiving instruction virtually from their teacher.

Latest News and Guidelines from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health

Last night (Monday/Presidents’ Day), the LACDPH issued a brief press release saying in part, “The state permits elementary schools to reopen as soon as we reach an adjusted case rate of 25 per 100,000. We are informing Los Angeles County schools tonight via an emailed letter that we expect to announce we have reached this threshold effective Tuesday, February 16.” You can read the press release in its entirety here. While this is an encouraging milestone in our path to reopening schools, there are still many details and guidelines that we are awaiting from the LACDPH to ensure we continue on a consistent and safe path back to campus. You can view the LACDPH “Reopening Protocols for K-12 Schools” here

COVID-19 Prevention Program

Since closing our schools on March 20, 2020, our staff has been working tirelessly to ensure our students’ education remains at the highest possible level, while simultaneously working to ensure a safe return to school as soon as possible. When the time comes to return our students and staff to campus, we want to ensure that we have all the safety measures, protocols, and PPE properly designated and ready to implement. A significant portion of our safe path to reopening is our COVID-19 Prevention Program, which was completed in December and you can view here.

Next Steps to Continue Our Path to Reopening Schools

As we remain hopeful and cautiously optimistic as the cases of COVID-19 drop, we have several exciting and crucial steps that will begin to happen in the coming weeks that we wanted to share with you.

  • Latest School Reopening Plan by Tuesday, February 23, knowing the plan will be adjusted as guidelines and protocols change
  • Board of Education Meeting on Tuesday, February 23, where we will share our latest School Reopening plan and provide additional information from this Update
  • Parent Survey will be sent to Arcadia Unified families to ensure input into how and when they prefer to return to campus
  • Vaccine progress and the latest medical data will be closely monitored
  • Guideline Adjustments from the state and county will continue to be closely watched, and our School Reopening Plan will be updated and adjusted accordingly so that when we open our schools we can keep them open with as minimal disruptions as possible

Commitment to Communications

As always, we remain committed to updating our dedicated Coronavirus webpage with new resources and information, as we did once again this week, with new FAQs and other resources you may find valuable. You can view this communication, our 34th, (in English and Chinese) and all the previous updates we have sent to all parents and staff on our website. Thank you all so much for your continued support of our students, staff, families, and community.

Update 32 - Mental Health Resources Published Friday, December 11, 2020, 11:42 a.m.

We hope everyone is staying healthy and doing well as we get ready for our Winter Break. In fact, that’s what we are touching base about in this update as we all get ready for the holidays. As coronavirus cases continue to rise and we are in the midst of another Stay at Home order, we realize and are empathetic to the fact that stress and anxiety levels could also be on the rise. As expected, with the drastic rise in cases and increased hospitalizations, our focus will remain on Distance Learning and the wellbeing of our students, staff, and community for the foreseeable future. In that light, we wanted to remind our students and parents of the COVID-19 Mental Health and Wellness Support Resources webpage that we created to try and help.

COVID-19 Mental Health and Wellness Support and Resources Page (click here!)

The webpage consists of valuable tools and resources, such as “10 Self-Care Strategies for Teens,” “Teen Guide to Mental Health and Wellness,” breathing and meditation exercises, mindfulness art for teens, the “Happiness Lab,” a virtual calming room, free yoga, and phone numbers and websites to support hotlines. There is also a list of links to all of our school counseling websites as well as a link to the new Arcadia High School Wellness Center.

Support

We want everyone to know that there is no need to struggle alone. We are here for you, and please continue to be there for each other. If you need someone to talk with about how you are feeling, please reach out to a friend, family member, AUSD teacher, AUSD staff member, AUSD counselor or administrator, or utilize one of the resources provided above. We have seen so much love and support during these difficult times when our schools have been closed and have been inspired by so many people willing to help. Even if you’re not in need of any support yourself, please think of someone who might be. Reach out to them by text, phone, or video. Simply say hello, check-in, offer support, or just share a laugh and a line of comfort. Our schools are physically closed, but our hearts remain wide open.
