Inter-district permits are for students who do not reside within the Arcadia Unified boundaries and would like to attend an AUSD school. This type of permit is also used for students who
do reside within AUSD boundaries but would like to attend school in a different district.
AUSD specifies the terms and conditions under which interdistrict attendance shall be permitted or denied. Students seeking or are currently on an interdistrict permit must meet the following conditions:
- Good attendance
- Positive behavior
- Academic progress
Parents and students are required to adhere to all AUSD policies, regulations, and procedures. Permits may be revoked at any time for non-compliance with terms and conditions. (Education Code 46600)
During our priority application periods, AUSD accepts both inter-district permit applications with a release from the student's district of residence and for provisional enrollment for students that do not yet have a release from the student's district of residence.
How to Apply
1. Gather documents that demonstrate academic performance, behavior/citizenship/work habits, and attendance. TK, K and grade 1 are not required to submit any documentation in these areas. Currently enrolled AUSD students also are not required to submit documents. You must have a document for each required area. There will be times where the same document may be used in multiple areas.
Documents may include:
Academics
- A Transcript (unofficial copy is acceptable) - is required for 10th -12th grade applicants.
- A report card (most recent available to the parent - does not need to be the current year)
- Teacher notes or comments
- Progress report(s)
Behavior
- A school discipline report
- A report card with work habits and citizenship marks
- A letter from the last school of attendance administrator
Attendance
- A printout from the school's information system (PowerSchool, Aries, Best, MiSiS, etc.)
- A report card with annual attendance information
Special Services Note: Students with an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 Plan should attach the most recent/current plan to the application. Not doing so may impact the approval of your application.
2. Obtain an approved inter-district release from the district of residence (These applications will have priority over provisional applications.)
- Provisional inter-district permit applications may be submitted without an approved inter-district release. The district understands that some districts do not process permits with the same deadlines as AUSD. Provisional enrollment is being offered to support parents/guardians in choosing the best educational program for their child(ren) and to be able to enroll prior to the start of the school year. Please be aware that approved provisional inter-district permits are subject to an approved release from the district of residence being submitted within the required timeline (within 30 school days of the first day of attendance).
3. Scan the required documents listed above. Save the file(s) to your computer or phone in a format (PDF or JPEG) that can be uploaded to your application.

Outgoing Inter-district Permits
Parents/guardians with a currently enrolled child that apply for an outgoing permit should be aware that when your child's outgoing permit is approved, your child will be withdrawn from AUSD. It is recommended that you either apply for a permit to the desired district and be accepted prior to requesting a release or wait until after April 8 or the end of the current school year. Once a student is withdrawn, parents/guardians will have to re-enroll in AUSD and the child may be assigned to a new classroom or school. We do not allow students with an outgoing permit to remain enrolled.
Directions:
1. Obtain an accepted proof of residency. Only one document is required. Documents that are acceptable proof of residency include: Property Tax Payment Receipts, Lease or Rental agreement (1 year or more, not month to month), Utility Bills (electricity, trash, water, gas), Voter registration, or Correspondence from a government agency (tax documents, welfare, social security).
2. Apply for an inter-district permit at the desired district of attendance/enrollment. Students currently enrolled in the desired district must still apply for a permit to attend school in that district. Applications with an approved permit will be given priority for release. Parents/Guardians may still apply for an AUSD release without an approved permit from the desired district.
3. Scan and save the proof of residency and Approved Interdistrict Permit from the district of residence (if available) to your computer or phone in a format (PDF or JPEG) that can be uploaded to your application.

Outgoing permits to be released are accepted anytime and reviewed every few weeks.
