PERMIT APPLICATION INFORMATION

The Governing Board recognizes that parents/guardians of students who reside within the geographic boundaries of one district may, for a variety of reasons, desire to enroll their children in a school in another district.

The Arcadia Unified School District (AUSD) considers both INTERDISTRICT and INTRADISTRICT permits, as well as PERMISSION TO REMAIN to provide different learning opportunities for students.

INTERDISTRICT PERMITS

INTERdistrict permits are for students who do not reside within the AUSD boundaries and would like to attend a school in AUSD. This type of permit is also used for students who do reside within AUSD boundaries but would like to attend school in a different district.

AUSD specifies the terms and conditions under which interdistrict attendance shall be permitted or denied. Students seeking or are currently on an interdistrict permit must meet the following conditions:

1) Good attendance, 2) Positive behavior, and 3) Academic progress

Parents and students are required to adhere to all AUSD policies, regulations, and procedures. Permits may be revoked at any time for non-compliance with terms and conditions. (Education Code 46600)

**Transportation shall not be provided for students attending on INTERdistrict agreement. AUSD will not agree to pay or be responsible for excess costs for students that choose to attend school in another district.**

CURRENT YEAR & 2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR INTERDISTRICT PERMITS

AUSD is accepting both INTERdistrict Permit applications with a release from the student's district of residence and for provisional enrollment for students that do not yet have a release from the student's district of residence. Approved students will receive information regarding how to enroll in AUSD.

CURRENT YEAR 2023-24

AUSD is ONLY accepting permit applications for current students who have moved.

Our priority periods are closed, however, we will review permits after school begins based on available space.

Currently enrolled students that have moved, may submit applications for ALL grades.

2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR INTERDISTRICT PERMIT PRIORITY WINDOWS

DO NOT SUBMIT PERMIT APPLICATIONS EARLY - THEY WILL BE DENIED

Priority ONE: April 8 to May 3
Priority TWO: May 6 to June 14
Priority THREE: June 17 to July 19

AUSD EMPLOYEES - May submit an early permit application beginning January 22, 2024. This will allow you to enroll your child for the 2024-25 school year.

Permit applications submitted during priority windows will be reviewed sometime after the last day of the window. Submitting a permit prior to the priority ONE start date may be required to be resubmitted. Submitting applications early will NOT result in being approved. IMPORTANT: Interdistrict permit applications with an approved release will have priority over applications for provisional enrollment.  Provisional enrollment is being offered to support parents/guardians in choosing the best educational program for their child(ren) and to be able to enroll prior to the start of the school year. Please carefully review the provisional enrollment information to understand the legal requirements for provisional enrollment.

All accepted permits are based on space availability in select grade levels. Applications may only need to be submitted once. Notifications of non-acceptance for the 2024-25 school year will begin on or before August 11, 2024. INTERdistrict permits submitted after July 19, 2024, will be accepted; however, available space usually is very limited, especially at the elementary level. Please follow the instructions below on how to submit an application for an INTERdistrict Permit Application (Incoming).

The district understands that some districts do not process permits with the same deadlines as AUSD. Provisional enrollment is being offered to support parents/guardians in choosing the best educational program for their child(ren) and to be able to enroll prior to the start of the school year. Please be aware that approved PROVISIONAL INTERdistrict Permits are subject to an approved release from the district of residence being submitted within the required timeline (within 30 school days of the first day of attendance).

To Note: Interdistrict Permits - No Renewal Needed

All students who are currently attending an AUSD school on an interdistrict permit are no longer required to submit annual or transition year permits. Once enrolled on an interdistrict permit, students will be registered automatically for the next year unless:

(1) The parent notifies the school they are returning to their district of residence.

(2) The student's permit is revoked for breach of the permit agreement which includes but not limited to - poor attendance, behavioral issues, lack of academic effort/performance.

INTERDISTRICT PERMITS (OUTGOING) APPLICATION PROCESS RELEASE FROM AUSD

Parents/Guardians that reside within AUSD boundaries that would like their child to attend a school in another district must complete and submit an INTERdistrict Permit Application (Outgoing).

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENTS - Parents/Guardians, with a currently enrolled child, that apply for an outgoing permit should be aware that when your child's outgoing permit is approved, your child will be withdrawn from AUSD.  It is recommended that you either apply for a permit to the desired district and be accepted prior to requesting a release or wait until after April 8 or the end of the current school year.  Once a student is withdrawn, parents/guardians will have to re-enroll in AUSD and the child may be assigned to a new classroom or school.  We do not allow students with an outgoing permit to remain enrolled.

AUSD will be using an electronic permit application process.

The parent/guardian of the student must have/create (free) a google Gmail account in order to submit an AUSD INTERdistrict permit application. This is so you are able to upload documents to the google form. You will be able to list a preferred email address that will be used to communicate with you.

DIRECTIONS

1. Obtain an accepted proof of residency. Only 1 document is required. Documents that are acceptable proof of residency include: Property Tax Payment Receipts, Lease or Rental agreement (1 year or more, not month to month), Utility Bills (electricity, trash, water, gas), Voter registration, Correspondence from a government agency (tax documents, welfare, social security), Auto Registration, Auto Insurance, Pay stub. (See required documents on the website for more accepted proof)

2. Apply for an Interdistrict Permit at the desired district of attendance/enrollment. Students currently enrolled in the desired district must still apply for a permit to attend school in that district. Applications with an approved permit will be given priority for release. Parents/Guardians may still apply for an AUSD release without an approved permit from the desired district.

3. Scan and save the proof of residency and Approved Interdistrict Permit from the district of residence (if available) to your computer or phone in a format (PDF or JPEG) that can be uploaded to your application.

4. Complete an Interdistrict Permit (Outgoing) Application by clicking HERE.

INTRADISTRICT PERMITS (SCHOOL CHOICE APPLICATION)

CURRENTLY ENROLLED OR PRE-ENROLLED STUDENTS ONLY

INTRAdistrict permits are for students who would like to attend an AUSD school other than their school of residence. INTRAdistrict permits are available each year during AUSD's annual SCHOOL CHOICE process.

**AUSD also offers open enrollment choice to students on an INTERdistrict permit through the INTERDISTRICT PERMIT TRANSFER SCHOOL CHOICE process.**

To Note about Intradistrict Permits:

Intradistrict permits continue unless the parent/guardian completes another School Choice intradistrict permit application or the contract is breached.

Parents/guardians of students transitioning to 6th grade, who would like to apply for a school other than the middle school associated with their current school of attendance must follow the process and timelines for new intradistrict permits listed below. If no intradistrict permit is filed, the student will be registered automatically.

INTRADISTRICT PERMITS APPLICATION PROCESS

AUSD will be using an electronic permit application process.

The parent/guardian of the student must have/create (free) a google Gmail account in order to access and submit an AUSD INTERdistrict permit application. You may use your child's school email if you prefer. You will be able to list a preferred email address that will be used to communicate with you.

You must submit an INTRAdistrict permit transfer application for each child separately.   Please be aware that applications are reviewed individually.  The parent/guardian will have the option to decline an approved INTRAdistrict permit if one or more siblings are not approved.

CLICK HERE TO SUBMIT AN INTRAdistrict PERMIT APPLICATION

Applications for an intradistrict permit transfer will be accepted between April 1 and May 1, each year. The parent/guardian of the AUSD enrolled student must complete an AUSD Intradistrict Permit Transfer Application and submit it electronically by clicking on the link below.

INTRAdistrict permits and transfers are only accepted during the priority window one time each year. All permit applications are collected during the application window. Once the window is closed, INTRAdistrict permit applications are given a random priority number assigned by lottery and processed following district administration regulation AR5116.1. We understand that there are reasons for your request. Please know that we are required to use a lottery system and INTRAdistrict permits are granted solely based on available space. Please do not ask staff from individual schools about available space as you may receive inaccurate information.

PERMISSION TO REMAIN (PTR)

RESIDENTS IN AUSD BOUNDARIES ONLY WHO ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED OR PRE-ENROLLED
RESIDENTS THAT HAVE MOVED OUTSIDE OF DISTRICT BOUNDARIES USE INTERdistrict PERMIT

An application may only be submitted for currently enrolled students that have changed their address within the same district boundary area. If a family moves within AUSD boundaries, they may apply for permission for their child(ren) to remain at the school they are currently attending. Also, if a student on an INTERdistrict permit moves within the boundaries of the current district of residence in which they have a release and AUSD permit, they may apply for permission for their child(ren) to remain at the AUSD school they are currently attending. These students will not need to seek a new release from their district of residence. The PTR application is available below and must be submitted to the school with proof of residency documents.

To Note about Permission to Remain:

Once a parent completes an application for permission to remain, that school becomes the home school for the student or the contract is breached. If the parent would like to change schools, the School Choice Intradistrict Permit application process must be followed. Parents/guardians of students transitioning to 6th grade, who would like to apply for a school other than the middle school associated with their current school of attendance must follow the process and timelines for new intradistrict permits listed below. If no intradistrict permit is filed the student will be registered automatically.

*5th-grade students on a PTR will matriculate to the feeder school of the current school of enrollment. An INTRAdistrict permit application must be submitted to return to the middle school of residence.

**Note: Permission to Remain applications are accepted year-round. During the summer when school offices are closed, applications with proof of residency may be emailed to [email protected] or dropped off at the Arcadia Education Center (AEC) 150 South 3rd Street Arcadia CA 91006.
