Arcadia Unified School Board Remains Committed to Education
Arcadia Unified’s Board of Education annually attends CSBA, an event highlighted by more than
120 professional development workshops on key governance topics
All five Arcadia Unified School District Board of Education members are heading to San Diego to join more than 3,000 school board trustees from across the state to tackle the most pressing issues facing public education at the California School Boards Association’s (CSBA) Annual Education Conference and Trade Show (AEC).
“We take pride in knowing that we are as committed to lifelong learning as the students and staff in our district,” said Arcadia Unified Board of Education Vice President Kay Kinsler. “We strive to stay informed on the issues and want to contribute to these important conversations for the benefit of our students and students everywhere.”
In addition to attending this conference each year while they are on the board, being active in the Arcadia community, and serving time in numerous Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) roles, each Arcadia Unified Board of Education Trustee is a graduate of the CSBA Masters in Governance program. The five-course program equips board members “with the knowledge and skills to build and support an effective governance structure.” The five courses are “Foundations of Effective Governance,” “Policy and Judicial Review,” “School Finance,” “Human Resources,” and “Community Relations and Advocacy.”
CSBA’s AEC is the paramount continuing education event for California school boards and the largest education leadership conference in the state. Uniting school district governing teams with superintendents, county office of education trustees, education advocates and some of the world’s top thinkers, conference attendees have the opportunity to explore methods to strengthen public schools and improve student outcomes.
“We’re honored to host the largest gathering of elected officials in the state and to provide a forum where school board trustees can listen to experts in the field, learn from their peers, and evaluate strategies that have improved conditions and boosted academic performance in schools across California and around the nation,” said CSBA CEO & Executive Director Vernon M. Billy.
“CSBA’s annual education conference allows school board members to engage with the most pressing topics in K-12 education and to enhance their governance practice in service of California’s 6.2 million public school students.”
CSBA’s AEC 2019 includes more than 120 workshops on subjects such as teaching and learning; advocacy, engagement and community relations; equity, opportunity and access; wellness and safety; and funding, finance, and facilities. Arcadia Unified’s Board of Education President Lori Phillipi, Superintendent Dr. David Vannasdall, and Chief Communications Officer Ryan Foran will host a workshop to share the district’s experience in supporting transgender student advocacy.

CSBA’s annual conference is the only statewide event that offers the governance perspective and the opportunity for education leaders to share insights and collaborate on solutions with their peers from across California.
