Coronavirus Update 78 - Welcome Back to School Safety, Published August 16, at 1:46 p.m.

Hello Arcadia Unified Families and Community,

We hope you had a fantastic summer break, and we are thrilled to welcome our students and families back to school this week! Arcadia High School is our first school back tomorrow on Wednesday, August 17, and then all of our middle and elementary school students return to campus on Thursday, August 18. Before we embark on another exciting school year, we wanted to briefly touch base regarding the latest health and safety protocols and the latest health order from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (LACDPH).

There is a lot of promising news as we proceed forward together into the 2022-2023 school year. Case counts remain low, and hospitalization rates are even lower. LACDPH updated its health order on Tuesday, August 10, for the first time since May, but there were no significant changes, so we will open schools in the same manner and with the same protocols as we ended the 2021-22 school year in June. The many health and safety protocols we implemented at the onset of the pandemic will continue to take place at all of our schools, which include, but are not limited to, frequent sanitization and disinfection of classrooms, especially high-touch points, masks will still be available upon request, and we will ensure our upgraded ventilation systems are continuously running properly. Our AUSD Health Helpline will also remain available to address questions and concerns related to COVID-19 and can be reached at [email protected]. As we all know, things can change rapidly, but this should make for a smooth transition and start to the new school year. You can view the latest health orders from LACDPH at the following links:

  • Masks are not required but recommended
  • Masks are available at schools upon request
  • Qualtrics screening will not be required this school year; however, please self-assess your child for symptoms of illness prior to each school day
  • Do not send your child to school if they are sick (click here for guidelines
  • Please continue to report positive cases via our AUSD Health Services Reporting and Support form here
  • The State of California Health Officer Order regarding Vaccine Verification of School Workers (issued August 11, 2021) remains in effect; this order requires all school workers to either show proof of full vaccination or be tested at least once per week.
  • Students and staff who are exposed to COVID-19 will be notified and will receive detailed instructions via email regarding masking, testing, and next steps

COVID-19 Testing

We are pleased to announce that we will continue to offer COVID-19 testing to AUSD students and staff. Based on updates from our County and State Public Health Partners, as well as feedback from our students, staff, and stakeholders, we are shifting to a new test distribution model.

Start of the Year Distribution: As part of our efforts to make testing accessible before the start of school, nearly 9,000 COVID-19 Rapid Antigen test boxes (18,000 tests) will have been made available to students through school registration days.

Rapid Antigen Testing: Based on feedback from our State and County Public Health Partners, Rapid Antigen tests are now the preferred method of COVID-19 testing for TK-12 schools. Rapid Antigen tests allow for both at-home and onsite testing. They allow for quicker return-to-school timelines for students and staff, assist with test-to-stay strategies, and can help to clear individuals to return to school after a COVID-19 infection. Because of this, PCR testing is no longer available as an option through AUSD and all testing offered will be through Rapid Antigen tests.

Testing Availability: Starting on Monday, August 22, 2022, up to one Rapid Antigen test may be requested each week for AUSD students and staff. Tests may be picked up from the AUSD COVID-19 Testing Kiosk in the lobby of the Arcadia Education Center:

150 S. 3rd Ave

Arcadia, CA 91006

7:30 - 4:00 p.m., Monday - Friday

(When school is in session.)

In order to pick up the test, please have a student or staff ID number ready along with the birthdate of the person who will be using the test. The COVID-19 Testing Kiosk is an automated system and will be taking the place of last year’s in-person test center. Please note, the availability of elective non-required weekly testing may be contingent upon funding and supplies from County and State Public Health Partners.

If a student or staff member is identified as a close contact in a COVID-19 exposure, a follow-up email may include additional testing options.

Rapid tests may also be available in the following ways:
